After recently my mother had in these two types of institutions is the level of care and personnel.
In a nursing home (sometimes known as skilled nursing SNF), the patients often need more advanced therapies, such as infusions, wound care, PT or OT. SNF has strict rules in most states on the number of nurses, LVNs CNA per patient. These organizations can long-term care, but also as transit centers for people not used to recover from the surgery (ie, a person needs intravenous antibiotics for a month).
Supported Living is not really a medical orientation. It was developed to help with daily tasks like dressing, cleaning, bathing, etc. Some schools have a policy not Dimentia and some Alzheimer's patients may be treated. There are no strict rules for nurses or LVNs, and most do not require full-time nurses. Most use MED-how for the management of medicines. Patients in daily life are supported almost all long term and can (in place) morefamily environment.

If you want to be busy at work, then a nursing home is a better option, but if you want more downtime and less physical work and assisted living is probably a better route.

I think that is sheltered housing where patients are in a better position for them and better than care patients in nursing homes.
Assisted living services is when you go home to people and help them to everyday things, so they do not go into a nursing home.
