First remove the software that was on the previous installation. When you are ready to reinstall, remove the USB port of the printer.
You need to reinstall the printer and the software. At one point, is, HP, if you have less than half say - like the USB printers that connect you to connect to. Then click OK and the program will continue the installation.
At the new start, Windows will find the new scanner itself and work.That, is a problem, particularly with HP printers and scanners.
You must wait until the software says to connect the printer. Weird.

HP provides a database driver for Windows Vista is not fully equipped for your printer.

Service Pack 3 addresses issues with HP products. My Vista does not recognize one of my computers from HP, until I found this new service pack is installed. Some people have reported, this is a problem, but no problem because it can be removed from the Add / Remove Programs. You can opt for this solution.
You may need to go to HP website and download a driver for your printer, because not recognize Vista.
